This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with Read Conmigo and Latina Bloggers Connect; however, all opinions and statements expressed here are completely my own.
As a dual-language teacher, I am always searching for high-quality Spanish resources. Whether I gather books through my local library or trips I take to other Spanish speaking countries (when available), in the end finding great books is not an easy task. Therefore, when I was presented with the opportunity to share FREE resources I could not help let you all know about them. Read Conmigo is a site I am more than emocionada to share. Their sole mission is to promote bilingual literacy by letting families receive free bilingual books (including games and activities) right to their door (and through the internet).
By subscribing to Read Conmigo, members (teachers AND parents) can: gain access to a digital library, receive notifications for when new books become available, and obtain free books delivered to their homes* or schools* (*book delivery is available in certain cities). For teachers, Read Conmigo lets you access comprehension resources for children at the elementary level (including videos), allows you to create word searches, and so much more (did I already mention books for your class?).
I am seriously calling all parents (and teachers) committed to helping their children become biliterate. No strings attached…just the gift of reading resources.
A recent study published by the Children’s Book Center found that out of the 3,200 children’s books published in the United States in 2013, only 2% had Latino themes and 1.5% (or 48 books) were written by Latino authors. In order to start a change even if it means one book at a time, Read Conmigo (with the sponsorship of Infinity Auto Insurance) is calling ALL Latino/a authors and inspiring authors to submit their manuscripts to be considered for national publication to the “Preserving our Culture through Bilingual Literacy” contest by October 31, 2014. The story must feature one or more Read Conmigo characters. The winning author(s) will receive $1,000 in prize money.
If you are a parent raising bilingual and bicultural children, this is a great resource to add to your toolbox. And of course, if you happen to be a Latino/a writer, go ahead and submit your manuscript. You may be the next published author for Read Conmigo. Have you started using Read Conmigo already? I would love to hear from you.
